On the way down to Wellington we saw a sign on the side of the road for Rivendell and had to go. In the Lord of the Rings movies, Rivendell is where the elves live and it is the most ideal woodland-fantasy city ever created. It is located in the forest among waterfalls with elegant and natural buildings.
Rivendell in the real world is located at Kaitoke Regional Park and no longer has any buildings or structures, except a memorial archway marking where the filming location was. It was still fun to go to and compare the real world to the world created by Peter Jackson.
In Wellington, we stayed with Luca’s friend, Robert. Luca and Robert know each other from high school in Rome. He now goes to university in Wellington. There were good times at Robert’s!
The highlight of our trip to Wellington was going to Weta Workshop, where the Lord of the Rings special effects, costumes, and props/accessories were made. Since then, the Weta Workshop has helped with other movies such as Avatar, King Kong, & Narnia. It was really neat learning about the design process that they use to make the various things the movies ask for. They start with simply sketching out designs and then make the ideas come to real life. It’s amazing.
