I spent 3 incredible weeks WWOOFing with the Mason family at the Amberley House. The Amberley House is a historic homestead near Christchurch. The property had a gorgeous garden on it that we rode the horses through. The gardens seemed to be straight out of a fantasy book with a “secret garden” vibe.
Angie and Andy were the best of hosts. I loved Angie’s positive spirit and laid back approach to life. Every time that I left her side I had a smile on my face. She was just lovely.
My job was caretaker of the animals. Everyday I fed and attended to the chickens, pigs, and horses. I would also spend my working time brushing and fussing over the horses, mucking, riding, and tiding up the barn area. Sometimes I would do gardening work if the animals didn’t occupy all of my working time. I was in heaven. Back at home I spend my spare time going out to the barn to fuss with the horses just for pure relaxation. To do it as my full time job was just perfect.
The horses were happy and fat…just how I like them.
My favorite horse was Folly, a 28-year-old ex grand prix horse. Even though I could not exercise her too hard, due to her age, I enjoyed practicing my dressage with her. It was amazing having a horse that knew all of her cues and gave no fuss when asked for something. She was the sweetest lady.
Luca was only at the Amberley House for a week or so and helped the family with gardening. He enjoyed exploring the gardens and taking pictures, especially of their adorable garden decorations.
My stay at the Amberley House was nothing but enjoyable. Angie and I were both so sad to part ways. If I ever find myself in New Zealand again I will be definitely sure to stop by at the Amberley House.
